Ethical Standards

Declaration of ethics

Revista Historia y Patrimonio considers ethical standards and good practices for the publication of its articles. This implies the definition of responsibilities for all the actors involved in its elaboration, organized in an Editorial Team, a Scientific Committee and a Board of Referees with high academic degrees and experience in their areas of specialization. The institutional affiliations and contact information of the members of these teams are published on the journal's website, ensuring compliance with the aforementioned ethical standards.

Responsibilities of the Editorial Team

The Editorial Team ensures regularity in the publication processes and standards, especially during the evaluation of articles. It is the responsibility of the Editorial Team to evaluate the pertinence of the material received in relation to the subject matter addressed in the call for papers, the fulfillment of the formal requirements set forth in the publication rules, and to ensure the breadth and diversity of points of view within the framework of the disciplinary interest of the journal, in order to avoid possible arbitrariness and/or discriminatory actions.

The Editorial Team must comply with the ethical standards of the journal and with all legal guidelines, including, but not limited to, those that do not allow defamation, copyright infringement and plagiarism. In addition, its members must ensure the proper functioning of the evaluation system, protecting during the process the confidentiality of the information concerning the authors, the data included in the article and the analyses performed or conclusions obtained. In the event of a conflict of interest of any member of the Editorial Team in any part of the process, the members of the Editorial Team will refer their work to another member of the team.

The Editorial Team will not use unpublished articles for other purposes. In the event of needing to mention them in relation to other studies, the Editorial Team must request the consent of the authors. Likewise, the members of the Editorial Team will not use any information presented in the comments made by the referees for their own benefit.

The Editorial Team responds to any conflict, complaints or warnings arising from the published articles, safeguarding the authorship and relevance of the research that has been published, as well as the prestige of the journal.

The Editorial Team reserves the right to make any necessary modifications to adapt the articles to the publication requirements, without compromising their contents. The opinions and contents, as well as any legal commitment affecting the articles presented, are the sole responsibility of the authors.

Authors' responsibilities

By submitting material to the journal, all authors accept its ethical and publication standards, and must guarantee that they will submit completely original manuscripts and that the text or materials that the authors have used refer to them correctly. Plagiarism in any form is an unethical behavior that will not be tolerated by the journal.

In the case of articles with more than one author, it is expected that all participants have made significant contribution to the contents and express recognition to those who have contributed to the final results. Information that has been obtained by private means cannot be published without the consent of the corresponding person or institution. The main author is responsible for the inclusion of all co-authors and collaborators and guaranteeing that all of them have reviewed and approved the final version of the document, consenting to its submission for publication.

Authors shall ensure accuracy in the presentation of their own ideas in their articles, differentiating the ideas cited. Failure to comply with this requirement is grounds for rejection of a paper by the journal. In the case of data collected or produced by the author/s, the procedure used should be made explicit, presenting the strategy and process to reach them, their subsequent analysis and the conclusions derived from the study. Private inquiries, such as conversations, correspondence and/or dialogues between third parties, are prohibited, except in cases of explicit written permission from those individuals.

An author is expected to not attempt to publish identical materials in more than one journal or other primary publication. Submission of the same subject matter to multiple journals and/or publication of the same work in multiple journals is an unethical practice and should not be tolerated.

The funding sources that allow for the development of research projects connected to the articles, as well as any commitment that could influence the interpretation of the conclusions and reflections, will be expressly stated by the authors, who will guarantee the transparency and veracity of this information. All authors must disclose in their final manuscript any financial or other conflicts of interest that could interfere with the results and interpretations of their research. Likewise, all funding for the project must be disclosed.

In case of discovering the existence of a mistake in the publication of their article, the author must immediately inform the editor(s), in order to correct it through an erratum in the following issue. In case of the identification of unethical behavior on the part of the author/s of an article, the Editorial Team must inform the fault by means of a statement in a subsequent issue.

Responsibilities of the referees

The Board of Referees is composed by professionals and academics specialized in different areas of the research fields covered by the journal, favoring diversity in terms of their geographical origin and institutional affiliation.

The assignment of articles by the Editorial Team to referees is not remunerated.

The referees must ensure the confidentiality of the content of the articles under review and compliance with the double-blind evaluation system, in which the referee does not know the identity of the author during the process, giving priority to objectivity. If a conflict of interest is detected, the referee will communicate its restriction to the Editorial Team, in order to reassign the article to another referee. Any manuscript submitted for review should be considered a confidential document and should not be discussed or presented to third parties.

Referees should consider recommending relevant published material that has not been considered or cited in the article under review. They should also detect if there is any considerable similarity between published material and the manuscript under evaluation. Referees will notify the Editorial Team if they notice the omission of relevant sources or if the work comprises total or partial plagiarism.

The information contained in unpublished articles may not be used in whole or in part by the referees, and if it needs to be cited by them, given its relevance to other studies, it must have the express connivance of the authors.

The referees’ comments should be made in a neutral manner and opinions should articulate their criticisms on the basis of reasonable arguments. Referees should refrain from receiving for review manuscripts that present a conflict of interest as a result of any possible connection, whether through institutions, companies, or personal connections to authors or others.

Treatment of unethical conduct

In the event that misconduct and/or unethical action on the part of an author is identified, it should be reported to the Editorial Team. Misconduct and unethical actions include, but are not limited to, the examples described here, such as plagiarism or falsification of research results.

The reporter of unethical conduct must provide sufficient information and evidence to initiate an investigation. All allegations should be considered seriously and treated similarly, until a corresponding outcome or agreement is reached. The Editorial Team is responsible for:

     -  Choosing the appropriate form of investigation, seeking the advice of the journal's Scientific Committee and/or appointing a special academic committee in consultation with the Institute and/or Faculty.

     -  Notifying whoever has violated the ethical rules of the journal about the misunderstanding or misapplication of the rules.

     -  The publication of a formal observation on the journal's website, detailing the misconduct.

     -  The formal removal from the journal of the paper(s) in question, along with a notification of this action for the audience of the journal.

     -   Enforcing a formal embargo on the author's submissions for a period determined by the Editorial Committee according to the seriousness of the misconduct.
